Helping children, young people and their families thrive

Professional support and training

Supporting your work

If you're a local professional and would like to work with us to support a family, call 020 8753 6070 or email contact@family-support.org.uk. We'll talk through the circumstances with you and take it from there. There's no need to fill in a form.

We offer a range of targeted support for children, young people and families. This covers a number of needs including parenting, education, health, domestic abuse, mental health, anti-social behaviour, substance misuse, offending and young carers.

Our work – a better understanding of brain development

We are heavily influenced by the work of the Alberta Wellness Family Initiative (AWFI). Their core belief is:

“The AFWI mobilises knowledge about early brain development and its connection to lifelong physical and mental health, including addiction. We bring together stakeholders from many callings to collaborate on health solutions that will directly impact families and individuals.”

Developing healthy brains

At Family Support our work is underpinned by the belief that every child needs loving, nurturing care from the adults around them if they are to develop the healthy 'brain architecture' they need to be able to thrive and fulfil their potential.

Toxic stress affects a child's development and causes healthy brain development to become impaired.

The good news is our brains aren't fully formed until around the age of 25, so there are plenty of opportunities to help young people develop the skills they need and to overcome the impact of earlier toxic stress.

Helping families

We understand that all adults around a child have a role to play in promoting healthy brain/mental development and this includes parents, guardians and neighbours but also extends to our own practitioners.

We understand that in reality family life is ‘messy’ and challenging circumstances often puts pressure on their time and energy. Parents generally welcome support that helps them to prioritise behaviour that will benefit their children. What they want above anything else is solid support that doesn't involve multiple conversations with different people.

Brain development resources

The Alberta Family Wellness Initiative has a range of support materials for professionals. All senior Family Support staff have completed or are working on the Brain Story Certificate, which is a fantastic free online course.

They also have a huge library of articles, videos and information about brain development.

Informing your staff

If you would like us to explain to your staff how important brain development is to their work, please contact us on 020 8753 6070. We have a wealth of resources and can also help you to plan a programme of staff development.
